Using EcoSal
This page offers some general definitions and information about accessing the content on the EcoSal Web site.
Content is accessible in three ways:
- Table of Contents - a three-panel display showing:
Left panel: the complete 2nd Edition Table of Contents
Center panel: the Web Edition Table of Contents
Right panel: What's New, featuring a list of the newest modules to come online.
The Web Edition TOC links to the complete list of current and proposed modules within each domain.
will take you to each list of modules;
will bring you back to the main page.
The 2nd Edition TOC offers some telescoping functions to help you locate all chapters.
will expand the TOC completely so you can see all chapters;
will expand just that heading to allow you to browse the sections or chapters underneath. Conversely,
will collapse the entire TOC;
will collapse just that heading or section.
- Search - an engine enabling you to create and simple or complex queries against EcoSal's extensive content. Other features allow you to combine or save searches. Additional links enable you to search data on other sites*. (For more about Search, see Using the EcoSal Search.) The Search engine will search both the 2nd Edition and the Web Edition.
- "My EcoSal" - a personal workspace where you can bookmark and annotate content and searches. (For more about "My EcoSal" see Using the "My EcoSal".)
The Module (Web Edition) or The Chapter (2nd Edition)
The main presentation format for content is by module or chapter. Each module or chapter includes the following:
- Module or Chapter Table of Contents - a telescoping linked list of all main heads and sub heads for that module or chapter, appearing the upper left hand frame. Clicking on a linked head will cause the that head (and portion of chapter text) to appear in the main frame. Clicking this button
will expand the TOC completely so you can see all heads;
will collapse the entire TOC.
appears in front of all main heads, and when clicked will reveal subheads below, if they exist.
- Core Text - the main content of the module or chapter appearing in the large, main frame. Within the text, a
checkbox* appears next to each main head and subhead for easy bookmarking
to your "My EcoSal" page*. For speed of loading and ease of display, figures and tables are not located within the core text. Instead, figures, tables, and literature citations are linked; clicking on one of these links in the core text will cause that item to load in a small popup window for easy access and viewing. Note: if a figure or table is exceptionally large, the link from the core text may cause only the first page of that item to load. In this case, however, the other parts are all available from the List of Figures and Tables (see item below).
- Equations - display inline in core text. If an equation is an image, clicking on an equation will cause a full- size image of that equation to open in a popup window.
- List of Figures and Tables - lists and links to all figures and tables appearing in that module or chapter. This list also displays part or all of the title or legend. Clicking a figure or table link will cause that item to load in a small popup window. Large figures or tables that take up many pages are displayed in EcoSal as separate pages, and are shown as separate items and separate links in this list (example: Chapter 109).
- References (Web Edition) or Literature Cited (2nd Edition) - available as a full list from the bottom of the chapter TOC, or as individual references linked to their citations within the core text. Clicking on a citation number in the core text will cause that reference to load in a small popup window.
- PDF - PDF files of the 2nd edition chapters only are available* to download for printing and personal use. PDF includes core text, complete list of literature cited, all figures and all tables. In some cases, figures and tables have not been optimized for formatting in PDF or printing; for the best viewing, refer to the online version. For more information, see PDFs.
